What Are The Types of Moving Head Lights?

LED moving head lights are heavily used in stage and event lighting. They allow light to move, change angle, and shift effects during a show. This makes them useful when one fixture needs to create many looks. For this reason, they are common in clubs, concerts, and live events.

There are different types of moving head lights, and each one serves a clear purpose. Some are designed to create narrow, sharp beams. Others are built to wash large areas with colour or project patterns. Knowing these differences helps avoid using the wrong fixture for a job.

In real projects, the right moving head depends on how the space is used. Room size, ceiling height, and viewing distance all matter. When these details are considered early, the lighting system works better and is easier to control.

In this article, we will discuss led moving head lights and their main types:

  • Spot Moving Head
  • Wash Moving Head
  • Beam Moving Head
  • Hybrid Moving Head

What Are Moving Head Lights?

What Are The Types of Moving Head Lights? 1

Moving head lights are used on stages. These entails a motors that move freely in any direction, rather than being positioned at the same point. This allows one to track a performer, put emphasis on a specific stage area, or even produce exciting lighting effects at a performance. Such as in the case of a DJ performance, a moving head can be used to illuminate the crowd and the DJ booth, instead of dozens of fixed lights.

These are designed to be controllable, and they can be programmed into a bigger show. You can adjust the speed, direction and colour, producing effects such as sweeps, chases or strobe effects. Such versatility makes them popular in concerts, theatres and nightclubs where the atmosphere and the visuals must vary continuously.

Moreover, these moving head lights are available in distinct types and serve different purposes. Some are set to produce a sharp and focused beam to highlight entertainers. While others produce a sweeping effect of coloured light around the stage.

Hybrid models have both in one, and they offer versatility without cluttering the setup. In reality, your venue, how you want to perform and what visual effects you wish to create will determine the right type to use.

Types of LED Moving Head Lights

Below are the common types of LED moving head lights.

Moving Head Spot Lights

Spot moving heads are used when specific lighting is needed. For example, when the concert is live, you can track a singer on the stage using a single light. These lights allow you to spotlight a single performer, a single prop or a particular area of the stage. Gobos can be added to project shapes and project logos as well. Practically, the beam is narrow, say 5°–30°, and therefore produces a sharp, distinct focus, which does not spread out onto other objects. Spotlights are also required in the performance when it is necessary to have a specific lighting position.

Moving Head Wash Lights

Wash lights are designed to illuminate more space evenly. Imagine a DJ performance or a theatre stage where you require soft and colourful lighting in the entire scene. They are not hard-shadowed to create atmosphere and mood. The beams are broader, typically 25°–40°, which can fill a stage/venue quickly with even light. Wash lights make the stage appear lively and vibrant, so that the performers and the audience have a dynamic and colourful stage backdrop.

Moving Head Beam Lights

Beam moving heads produce slim and sharp rays of light that leave an impression in any establishment. These are commonly used in nightclubs, concerts, and festivals. The beam is quite focused and dramatic, as it is narrow (app. 3°–10°). Beam lights are typically used to increase the smoke effect and haze because the beam is not seen; to do this, lighting technicians will integrate beam lights with smoke or haze. They are ideal for making chasing effects, sharp patterns, and high-energy performance situations.

Hybrid Moving Head Lights

These are used as a spot, wash or even beam light all within one and the same fixtures. This is applicable to small venues or when you are touring, and you do not want a bunch of lights. These lights offer vibrant colour mixing, gobos and strobe effects as well. So, you get a plethora of choices. The beam angles may range between 5 ° and 40 °, which allows you to illuminate the performers and light the stage without additional equipment. Practically, hybrid lights conserve space, reduce the time of setting up a lighting rig and simplify their operation.

How to Choose the Right Moving Head Light

Below, we have highlighted the useful tips to effectively choose the right moving headlight.

Look at Your Space

For smaller clubs and theatres, a spot or hybrid moving head provides the most effective lighting solution. For larger venues and/or outdoor events, such as festivals, a beam or wash light can be a go-to option to effectively illuminate larger areas and also create an effective lighting design.

Think About the Effect You Want

Consider the type of lighting effect you desire to achieve. Do you want to focus on a single performer? In this case, a spot moving head would be ideal. Do you want to add colour and/or create a specific atmosphere throughout the entire stage? A wash moving head will do just that. Are you looking to create both effects (a spot and a wash) from one fixture? Then a hybrid moving head is perfect for you. Finally, if you are looking for a sharp, dramatic beam of light, then a beam moving head is ideal.

Check the Beam and Brightness

If you are looking to create a tight beam of light, look for a light with a narrow beam angle. On the other hand, if you want to create a wider beam of light (to allow you to cover a larger area), consider a light with a wider beam angle. Finally, ensure that the light you choose is capable of producing a sufficient light intensity for your stage (or event). Larger venues, or those that are performing during daylight hours, require higher levels of light output than smaller venues.

Ease of Use and Setup

Some LED moving heads are extremely easy to set up and can be installed by a small team with little to no technical knowledge. Other moving heads require extensive programming and have more complex requirements (in terms of electrical power). Therefore, when selecting a light, choose one that fits within your team's level of expertise and time constraints to ensure a smooth production.
