The heart of the historic city center of Guelph is the market square, the city\'s newest center for festivals, concerts, community events and civic celebrations.
Today\'s market square is inspired by the city\'s original 19th-century Market Square district, which was previously used for livestock auctions, agricultural markets and banquets outside the town hall.
While these activities no longer monopolize the space in front of the town hall, its function remains the same-becoming the central space for residents to gather and celebrate the community.
Since John gaeldt first sought to open a central public square in his 1827 town plan, there have been many changes in the space.
Between 1857 and 1968, the city center of Guelph saw the construction, expansion, transformation of the Market House/City Hall, and finally transformed into the City Hall (
Is now home to the provincial Criminal Court).
Today, the market square is very lively.
Round attractions for locals and tourists.
On February 2012, the City of Guelph unveiled the Revival Market Square with a formal opening ceremony.
The meeting was attended by the Lambden family and local group ice rink mice, who jointly raised more than $1 million to build a Central ice rink in the square.
In the warm months, the ice rink becomes an interactive water facility where visitors can splash around or watch programmable jets squirt water through air.
There are stone stools and bistro tables and chairs around the water facilities/ice rink, perfect for people-watching.
Additional lighting and sound equipment on the square also help to transform the ice rink/water facilities into a stage for concerts and other special celebrations.
The huge screen of the market square is the perfect place to watch home outdoor screenings
Play friendly on warm summer nights.
The open space in the square also provides easy access to the shops and restaurant terraces on Carden Street.
