TORONTO —
Licensed cannabis producers are stepping up their production efforts to address the shortage that has plagued the cannabis market since the legalization in October. But the time it takes to grow regular marijuana means consumers may still have a few weeks to wait.
Marijuana is not just its nickname, it grows like a weed, but it takes 18 weeks for the plant to go from seed to harvest before it goes into processing and packaging.
CannTrust, a licensed producer, led Canadian media to visit their planting and processing facilities and get a close look at the process.
Here are the life stages of cannabis plants: from seeds to plants, to processing and packaging. 1)
Most commercial cannabis growers skip the seed stage and grow new plants from the cuttings of mature cannabis, because the seeds take longer and are prone to genetic variation, which may affect the quality of the product.
From so-
Known as the \"parent plant\" that grows for gene cloning \".
The name comes from the fact that they must be women --
Male plants produce pollen and seeds, but female plants produce coveted cannabinoids-filled flower.
\"Every plant in the greenhouse is a female plant,\" said Michael carplin, managing director of Canonto Niagara Falls.
Regional planting facilities.
\"Men are not allowed in this facility.
He said: \"planting a new plant from the cuttings will produce plants with the same genes, allowing producers to produce marijuana from certain strains with specific features.
\"It\'s called the mother plant because it basically produces children,\" says Camplin . \".
\"The young plants it produces will have the same features as the mother. \"2)
The seed branches are removed from the mother plant and planted in a low light and high humidity environment into a humid start-up cube.
\"They are talking nonsense,\" says Camplin . \"
Two weeks later, the roots began to sprout by starting the cube and the seedlings were transplanted to the larger cube.
After two weeks of growth, young cannabis plants were transferred to a slightly larger base. 3)
Once the seedling stage is exceeded, the plant enters a nutritional state and is encouraged to grow and grow.
This is done by controlling the amount of light received by the plant.
If the plant receives daylight for 18 hours or more in a day, it will continue to grow without producing any flowers, Camplin said. 4)
Getting plants to blossom requires convincing it that autumn is coming, which means reducing the cycle of light.
\"Cannabis plants are very sensitive to light, and when the length of the day is shortened in nature, they are triggered to blossom because summer begins to turn into autumn,\" he said . \".
\"The days are getting shorter and shorter, and plants know it\'s time to breed.
\"By shortening the daylight period to 12 hours to simulate seasonal changes, the plant will be prompted to blossom and produce the required buds.
The time it takes for plants to blossom depends on the variety, but varies from 7 weeks to 10 weeks, Camplin said. 5)
Once the flowering plant reaches the required stage, it is time to harvest.
Flowers or buds of plants are wrapped in tiny, sparkling hair --
Like the gland of the active ingredient in a plant containing cannabinoids, it is called trichomes. The best-
Cannabinoids are known to be THC and CBD.
Mao homes also contains terpen Ene, which creates a unique flavor and smell.
These plants are cut, Camplin says, and cannabis buds are mechanically separated from stems and leaves before they are examined and manually trimmed. 6)
Then dry the fresh marijuana on the shelf for up to two weeks.
The buds are then stored in loose enclosed plastic bags in the large bin, which helps to control the humidity for two weeks.
\"This makes the moisture level equal, turning on and stirring the moisture every day --
Or burp like they said in the drying room.
\"Then it\'s closed,\" says carplin . \"
Placing them in a closed Bin also helps the buds retain terpen Ene, he said.
After drying is completed, the buds are graded by size.
Dry flower sales are usually preferred for larger buds, he said, while smaller buds are usually dedicated to oil. 7)
Chris Lucky, vice president of CannTrust, said that at this stage of testing and processing, cannabis was tested for quality before it was cleared for the manufacturing process
President of supply chain and manufacturing.
It takes an average of 10 to 11 days to obtain laboratory results.
Once the Bud has passed the proper test, the pot is packaged for sale or the production of cannabis oil by the extraction process. 8)
Extraction of buds selected to produce oil through industry-
Size grinder and bake.
CannTrust\'s director of extraction and refining, Anna jakobmiye, said that similar to when marijuana is smoked, the heating process activates the ingredients in the bud, which provide medicinal effects.
\"We are now manipulating it to provide drugs,\" she said . \".
The roasted cannabis is then placed into the extraction machine, which uses heating and pressurized carbon dioxide to separate the cannabinoids from the plant.
\"You are removing cannabinoids as well as some other ingredients of the plant, but you will leave a real dry product,\" she said . \".
The resulting liquid containing cannabinoids is mixed with a carrier oil called medium chain glycerin triacid ester or MCT oil.
Then bottle the oil or put it in the capsule and pack it for sale. 9)
Packaging and marking finished products, including strict restrictions on the use of colors, graphics and logos, in accordance with Health Canada guidelines.
Products shipped to the Canadian adult use market will be subject to consumption tax, which indicates that the product is legally produced and the applicable tariffs are paid.
Each product must have stamps corresponding to the province or region to be sold.
Many cannabis producers blame the complexity of such stamps for causing bottlenecks in the supply chain and for causing shortages.
Questions raised by the producer included delays in receiving the stamps and the need for glue to paste the stamps, which slowed the process.
Marijuana is a whole new industry, and companies are constantly learning and improving these processes and incorporating automation where possible to speed up the process, says Lucky.
\"Everyone is learning the process. . .
As an organization and the industry as a whole, we have done a lot of things, such as how we can automate.
