led vs. lcd tvs explained: what’s the difference?

by:Marslite     2020-05-01
Starting or upgrading home theater settings can involve a lot of different things, but it often boils down to a major question: what kind of TV should you get?
Luxury TVs such as OLED models for LG or Sonyor Samsung QLED TVs can be under a lot of pressure, but most of us have budget constraints that limit our options, LED and LCD are presented again and again.
But what\'s the difference?
It\'s a problem we \'ve heard a lot from the fledgling home theater shoppers, but we really shouldn\'t do that.
We blame the initials acronyms.
Here\'s a simple answer: LED TVs are LCD TVs, but it can be surprising how the definition of each term becomes so confusing.
LED and LCD: Although there are different initials acronym words, the led TV is just a specific type of LCD TV.
The correct name is actually \"LED-
Backlight LCD TVs, \"but it\'s too hard for everyday conversations, so people usually call them LED TVs.
LCD display for led TV (LCD)
The panel that controls the position of the light display on the screen.
These panels are usually made up of two polarized materials with a liquid crystal solution between them.
When the current passes through the liquid, it causes the crystal to align so that the light can (or can’t)pass through.
Use each crystal as a shutter to let the light pass through or block it.
Since both LED and LCD TVs are based on LCD technology, you might want to know what the difference is.
In fact, what is the difference between it.
Cold cathode fluorescent lamps for old LCD TVs (CCFLs)
Provide backlight while LED-
Backlight LCD TVs use a range of smaller, more efficient lighting devices
LEDs (LEDs)
Illuminate the screen.
With the advancement of technology, LED lights are now used in all LCD TVs and are generally considered LED TVs.
For those of you who are interested, we will delve into the backlight below, or you can go into the local dimming section.
There are three basic forms of lighting used in LCD TVs: CCFL backlight, full backlight
LED backlight and LED edge lighting.
Each of these lighting technologies is different in important ways.
Let\'s go deep into each.
The CCFL backlight is an old one, now-
An abandoned form of display technology in which a series of CCFLs sit on the inside of the TV behind the LCD display.
These lights illuminate the crystals fairly evenly, meaning that all areas of the picture have similar levels of brightness.
This affects some aspects of picture quality, which we will discuss in more detail below.
Because CCFLs are larger than LED arrays, ccfl LCD TVs are larger than LED-LCD TV backlight. Full-
Array backlight replaces outdated CCFLs with an led array covering the back of the LCD screen, including led areas that can be lit or darkened during a process called local dimming. TVs using full-
The array LED backlight makes up the healthy part of high brightness
There are good reasons for terminal TV market
With more precise and even lighting, they can create better image quality than the ccfl LCD tvs once could, and start up more efficiently.
Another form of LCD screen lighting is LED edge lighting.
As the name implies, edge-
The illuminated TV has LEDs on the edge of the screen.
There are several different configurations of this, including the LEDsalong at the bottom, the led at the top and bottom, the led on the left and right, and the led on all four edges.
These different configurations lead to differences in image quality, but the overall brightness capability still exceeds what the ccfl LCD TV can achieve.
Although there are some disadvantages of edge lighting compared to full lighting
The result of an array or direct backlight display is edge lighting, which allows manufacturers to make thinner TVs at lower manufacturing costs.
To better close the local
Dimming quality gap between edges
Television and television
Manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung have developed their own advanced edge lighting forms.
Sony\'s technology is known as the \"ultra-thin Backlight Master Driver\", while Samsung has adopted an \"infinite array\" in the qled TV series \".
These maintain a slim profile that can be achieved through the edge
Lighting design, but local dimming quality with full-
Array backlight.
What is local dimming?
Local dimming is a function of the led LCD TV, where the LED light source behind the LCD is darkened and lit to meet the image needs.
Even in a dark scene, the liquid crystal display can\'t completely stop the light from passing through, so the dimming light source itself helps to produce deeper black and more impressive contrast in the picture.
This is achieved by selectively dimming the LEDs when a specific part of the pictureor region —
Going to dark.
Local dimming helps the LED/LCD TV to match the quality of the olderPlasma display more (RIP)
As well as new oled displays, they have better contrast in essence
What ccfl LCD TV can\'t do.
The quality of local dimming varies depending on the type of backlight used by the LCD, the number of backlight areas used, and the quality of processing.
Here is an overview of effective local dimming for each LCD TV. TVs with full-
The array backlight has the most accurate local dimming and therefore the best contrast.
Since the led array spans the entire LCD screen, the area can usually be darker and finer than the edge
Bright TV, the brightness of the entire screen is often more uniform.
ImpressiveP of Vizio-Series and M-
Series TV is a good example of a relatively affordable model using a variety of TVszone, full-
Array backlight with local dimming.
\"Direct local dimming\" and full-
Array dimming, just less led distributed further in the array.
However, it is worth noting that many manufacturers do not distinguish \"direct local dimming\" from full dimming
Array dimming as two separate forms of local dimming.
We still feel that it is important to notice this difference because there are fewer and fewer
The separated led will not have the same precision and consistency as full-array displays.
Because edge lighting uses LEDs located at the edge or edge of the screen, projecting light onto the back of the LCD screen rather than directly from behind the screen, it may produce very subtle blocks or light pixel bands within or around areas that should be dark.
Therefore, the local dimming of the edge
Compared to full TV, bright TV sometimes leads to some ambiguity in the dark areaarray LED TVs.
It should also be noted that not all LED edges
The lit TV provides local dimming, which is why it is not uncommon to see the glowing light strip on the edge of the TV, and the brightness towards the center of the screen is low.
Since the eccfl backlight TV does not use led, the model of this lighting mode does not have dimming capability.
In contrast, the LCD panel of the ccfl LCD is constantly illuminated evenly, which makes a significant difference in image quality compared to the led LCD.
This is especially noticeable in scenes with high contrast, as the dark part of the picture may look too bright or washed away.
When you look in the well
The bright rooms easily ignore or miss the difference, but in the dark rooms it will be very obvious. OLED vs.
As soon as you start exploring the world of modern display technology, the new initials acronyms will appear.
The two you see most often
Two of the most important
OLED and QLED.
Although the name sounds similar, OLED (organic light-emitting diode)
Television belongs to their own category. We have an in-
Depth Guide on differences between OLED and QLED displays, but here\'s a quick overview: OLED displays use pixel panels
Organic compounds that react to electricity.
Because every tiny pixel (
Millions on modern displays)
The OLED display can be turned off separately to provide incredible deep contrast and better contrast
Pixel accuracy is higher than any other display type on the market.
Because there is no need for a separate light source, the OLED display is also very thin.
Usually only a few millimeters.
OLED displays often appear in high
A terminal TV that replaces LED/LCD technology, but that does not mean that the LED/LCD does not have its own high-end technology.
QLED is a high-end product of Samsung LED/LCD TV.
Unlike OLED displays, this is not the case with QLED
Called launch display technology (
QLED pixels are still lit from behind).
However, QLED TVs provide updated lighting techniques in the form of quantum dots materials on conventional LED LCD (
Therefore, \"Q\" in QLED \")
Overall efficiency and brightness are improved.
This will convert to a better, brighter grayscale and color and enhance HDR (
High Dynamic Range)abilities.
